The proposal
Fingal County Council is proposing the upgrade and installation of existing and new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure between Clonee, at the Fingal County administrative border, to the Blanchardstown Shopping Centre. This new route will help people of all abilities to enjoy a feeling of safety when walking and wheeling. Safe pathways and segregated cycle lanes are designed to link local schools, sport and shopping. The route will also connect to the wider public transport network for those taking longer journeys.
Works proposed
• New protected cycle lanes and upgrade of existing footpaths.
• New cycle track added to junctions and to the R147, L3025, Huntstown Wood.
• New zebra crossings and cycle track added to roundabouts.
• Bus stop upgrades to allow bikes to safely pass.
• Lane width changes to provide space for walkers and bikes.
• Changes to junctions along the route to make crossing the road safer.
• Traffic calming measures including ramps to control vehicle speed.
The route
The route begins on the R147, at the Fingal County administrative border and travels through Littlepace Road, Huntstown Wood and Huntstown Way/Blakestown Way before terminating at the Blakestown Way/R121 roundabout.
The benefits
With safe pathways and segregated cycle lanes, people of all ages and abilities can avail of walking and wheeling for local journeys to school, sport and shopping. The route will connect to public transport routes by bus and train for longer journeys. By making active travel safer the choice to switch to walking or wheeling for local journeys will be easier. A reduction in the number of cars being used for local journeys will lead to better air quality and less traffic congestion. Crossing the road will be safer, particularly for older people, those with disabilities and children.
