Over €1.1 million in Community Climate Action funding available to help cut emissions

Over €1.1 million in Community Climate Action funding available to help cut emissions

Fingal County Council has launched Phase 2 of the Community Climate Action Programme which aims to empower communities to deliver practical low-carbon projects that support the Sustainable Development Goals and a Just Transition. Previous rounds funded solar panels that cut costs and emissions for local clubs.

We recognise the global impact of our actions, particularly the use of fossil fuels, which is why the Council is fully committed to reducing the greenhouse gas emissions driving climate change, has scrutinised how we deliver services, and has set out a series of actions in our 5-year Climate Action Plan.

The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O’Leary said: “Fingal Communities & Clubs have a great opportunity to apply for grant funding of over €1.1m for climate action and energy efficient projects enabling communities to lower emissions. Find out more and discuss potential projects locally. Clubs and organisations all over Fingal received funding for solar panels during the last round. This has reduced their electricity bills significantly and reduced emissions also."

Projects can focus on community energy, travel, food and waste, shopping and recycling, and local climate and environmental action.

Mayor and Minister launch €1.1m fund to tackle climate change

Helping launch the programme, Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O’Brien TD said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for community organisations, sports clubs and eligible registered charities to apply for 100% grant funded projects aimed at reducing carbon emissions locally and in the community setting.”

Local Authorities are very well positioned in Irish society to assist communities to drive and deliver change. Strand 1 of the Climate Action Fund, Building Low-Carbon Communities, is being administered by Fingal County Council having an allocation of €1,127,000. The Community Climate Action Officer is tasked with engaging with communities to identify, develop and deliver projects under this Strand, the aim of which is to lower emissions.

The overall objective of ‘Community Climate Action Fingal’ is to empower large and small, rural and urban communities, in partnership with Fingal County Council, to develop local low-carbon sustainable communities, in a practical and structured way, which will contribute to the national effort to lower our carbon emissions.

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council Annemarie Farrelly commented: “The council stands ready to support Fingal communities to deliver high-quality projects that cut emissions and drive local climate action. If your group has an idea - be it energy upgrades, transport measures or shared low-carbon initiatives - now’s the time to explore it.”

Eligible groups include Tidy Towns, residents groups, voluntary not-for-profit organisations, sports clubs (all sports) and non-Fingal owned community centres. Applicants should be members of the Fingal Public Participation Network (PPN). Schools, educational facilities are not eligible.

Every project should aim to lower emissions. There are three grant scales, small grants up to €20k, medium grants up to €50k and large grants up to €100k. There is an 8-week window to develop applications and the closing date for submissions is Monday 22nd December 2025. Groups are advised to contact the Community Climate Action Officer first to discuss proposals, determine eligibility and to develop applications.

Groups and organisations can partner together if they wish, to apply for the grant to cover the various themes.
