Two new innovative play spaces proposed for Dublin 15

Fingal County Council has launched public consultations on two exciting proposed public play spaces in the Dublin 15 area. These projects represent a major step forward in creating inclusive, imaginative, and nature-rich recreational environments for local communities for years to come.

New Play Spaces D15

The proposed play areas - in Hazelbury Park and Hartstown Park - share a strong commitment to inclusive design, sustainability, and biodiversity. Both developments will create high-quality, engaging spaces where children of all ages and abilities can play, explore, and connect with nature.

There is an emphasis on inclusive and accessible features, such as wheelchair access to play zones, ways, sensory zones and accessible sand and water play. Each site incorporates natural landscaping, pollinator planting, and will support biodiversity and climate resilience.

The play space at Hartstown Park spans approximately 3,000m² and draws inspiration from the park’s existing whimsical entrance feature, where a dragon or troll is said to reside. Themed as “The Enchanted Forest,” the space will encourage creative role play and exploration for children of all ages and abilities.

Key features proposed for Hartstown include:

  • Around 20 pieces of play equipment across themed zones of water, sand, climbing, swings and teen play.
  • Timber sculptures, seating, boulders, and picnic/play tables
  • Natural woodland paths and timber balance routes
  • Extensive landscaping with multi-stemmed trees to promote biodiversity

At Hazelbury Park, the proposed area will cover approximately 1,000m² and is designed as a multi-zoned nature-based environment promoting both play and community engagement. It will focus around four key themes:

  • Woodland Quarter – Featuring a log climb, tunnel mound, and a secluded glade with challenging structures like a climbing frame and tyre swings
  • Wetland Quarter – To include a biodiversity hub with a pond and stepping stones.
  • Hill Quarter – A domed hill with a stone plinth stage and embankment slide.
  • Meadow Area – With mown paths, stumperies, and areas for wildlife observation.

Fingal County Council encourages members of the public to review both proposals and share their feedback via the council’s Consultation Portal: https://consult.fingal.ie/en/browse. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 27 August 2025.
