Fingal Calls for Safe Celebrations This St Patrick’s Weekend
As St Patrick’s Day celebrations get underway, Fingal County Council is reminding residents to keep safety in mind throughout the Bank Holiday weekend. With parades, celebrations and increased travel expected across the county, everyone is encouraged to stay cautious and plan ahead. Motorists are urged to make responsible choices by slowing down, avoiding distractions and never driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. Always ensure that seatbelts are worn by all passengers and take time to plan journeys in advance by designating a driver, organising public transport, walking where it is safe to do so, or booking taxis early. Drivers are reminded to carry out basic vehicle checks, including tyres, lights, wipers and fluid levels, to maintain a safe stopping distance, reduce speed in poor weather or low light, and pull in to rest if they feel drowsy. Extra care should be taken for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, particularly around busy parade routes and local events.
For those choosing to swim or take part in coastal activities this weekend, safety remains paramount. Never mix alcohol with water‑based activities or when walking near water. It is important to check weather conditions and tide times before heading out, as sudden changes or high tides can create hazardous situations and may leave walkers stranded. Always carry a reliable means of communication, such as a fully charged mobile phone, VHF radio or Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), and always inform someone of your plans and expected return time. Wearing a suitable Personal Flotation Device (PFD) is essential for all water‑based activities, including shoreline angling. Walkers along cliffs and coastal paths should stay well back from edges. Anyone who sees someone in difficulty on the water or along the coast, or suspects they may be in trouble, should use Marine VHF Channel 16 or dial 112 and ask for the Coast Guard. Road Safety Officer at Fingal County Council, Larry Bergin, said: “With plenty of celebrations, parades and events happening across Fingal this St Patrick’s Day, everyone has a responsibility to help keep our roads and communities safe. Let’s make this Bank Holiday Weekend one to remember for all the right reasons by slowing down, staying alert, and looking out for one another.”
Fingal County Council encourages everyone to enjoy the St Patrick’s Bank Holiday weekend safely by staying mindful, preparing ahead of time and taking extra care while travelling.
