How it's Made festival to explore the past, present, and future of Artificial Intelligence

To help mark the 30th anniversary of Science Week, Smart Balbriggan and the SCÉAL Collective are hosting the 3rd annual How It’s Made festival in Balbriggan, under the theme of Then. Today. Tomorrow.

This year the event is titled ‘Unmasking AI’ showcasing all things Artificial Intelligence. Researchers from the CONNECT Centre collaborated with artists in the SCÉAL Collective to host a symposium at Trinity College Dublin to exchange ideas about the evolution and impacts of AI on Society and our daily lives, which led to the creations.

Running from the Thursday the 13th to Saturday the 15th of November, the event will include school tours, an art exhibition, workshops and performances. With six locations across Balbriggan hosting several artists including Nunce McAuley, Anastasia Kerdina and Aamir Oyeme, this event is one not to be missed. Details can be found on the SCÉAL Collective website.

‘We are delighted to see How It’s Made come to Balbriggan again for year three,” Aoife Sheridan, Senior Executive Officer with Fingal County Council’s Economic, Enterprise, Tourism & Cultural Development Department commented. “Artificial Intelligence is a topic which encompasses everything from business to the arts and beyond. It is a fantastic opportunity for the community to interact with and learn from the creative experiences.”

Art Historian and Curator of the festival, Valeria Ceregini believes the theme of Then.Today.Tomorrow. speaks to Unmasking AI very nicely, saying: “In order to truly project on what we might see in the future, we must also consider how we arrived at this point. Humanity as a collective need to carefully reflect and the arts helps provide this mirror to society as we consider how to create the future together as humans ensuring technology has only a role to play, maybe not a leading one."

The Quantum and Answers Trailer will be onsite from Ireland QCI in the CONNECT Centre, a mobile engagement unit is designed to make the complex world of quantum communication accessible to everyone. The community is invited to step in and explore answers through interactive exhibits and demonstrations inside from Quantum storytelling to how Quantum and AI are converging.

Steven Flynn, Digital Programme Officer for Fingal County Council stated: “AI can seem like this abstract thing and yet it seems to be everywhere suddenly. Regardless of your views around technology, I recommend everyone come along and enjoy the experiences on offer as creativity has a unique way of helping us all understand the world around us.”
