Swords Main Street Transformation

Over the next decade, Swords’ population is due to grow significantly. With the arrival of MetroLink and Bus Connects, more residents and visitors will move through Swords Main Street.

In 2022, Fingal County Council launched the Sustainable Swords Strategy, which was the result of two years of consultation with the local community. One of the core recommended projects was an upgrade of Swords Main Street.

Works have begun on site at the top of Main Street and County Hall as part of the Swords Cultural Quarter Public Realm project.

To build on this transformative project for the town of Swords, Fingal County Council is now looking to start the design process for Swords Main Street Transformation Project which covers the area from the front of County Hall to the Garda Station on Main Street and the local laneways.

The vision is for a vibrant Main Street that fosters community, supports local business, celebrates heritage, and enhances connectivity, creating a welcoming space for all in the heart of Swords.

The proposed Main Street project will provide welcoming and diverse public spaces, enhance footfall, and position Swords for the future as a more attractive, thriving, and resilient town, while celebrating the area’s unique character and heritage.

What are the opportunities for the upgrades to Main Street?

  • Introducing universal design features will make the Main Street accessible to all
  • Seating areas, play features, and pocket parks will make the street more social
  • Biodiverse planting, and sustainable urban drainage systems will enhance the streetscape
  • Creating local heritage trails that celebrate Sword’s historic value
  • A public realm investment that supports the business community
  • Laneway upgrades will provide convenient pedestrian access bringing greater footfall to the town centre
  • Providing appropriate loading bays for businesses
  • Increasing accessible parking spaces
  • Better placements for bin collection

In Summer 2026, Fingal County Council held a non-statutory consultation, which gave the community an opportunity to help shape designs for Swords Main Street and the local laneways.

The project team will review and consider the outcomes of the public consultation as part of the ongoing design process.

As part of the planning process in 2027, a comprehensive Statutory Consultation will be held inviting further input from the public. Subject to planning permission, the project will commence to the detailed design and construction phase.
