4th Annual How Its Made Expands from Balbriggan to Swords
The 4th annual How It’s Made arts and science festival has expanded from Balbriggan to include Swords in the 2026 edition.
How It’s Made is an annual event founded by the SCÉAL Collective and renowned curator Valeria Ceregin and is known to be ‘where the arts and research collide’, enabling a collaboration between researchers, scientists, artists and communities to make science, technology and environmental topics accessible, engaging and relevant to the public during Science Week each autumn.
The November 2026 initiative is funded and supported by Fingal County Council and Research Ireland in partnership with Smart Balbriggan and the CONNECT Centre (Trinity College).
Science Week 2026 – The Living System of Water
The fourth edition focuses on water as a shared living system, aligning with Research Ireland’s Science Week theme of Water: From Molecule to Ocean.
“We are delighted to collaborate on this innovative event again this year,” said Dominic Byrne, Head of Digital Services for Fingal Council Council, “It’s inspiring to see artistic creations reflect how we use technology to interact with the natural world and how we as citizens can come together to think about the challenges of our communities in different ways.”
Artists were welcomed in a symposium at Trinity College over the summer and ongoing sessions alongside hydrologists, environmental researchers, scientists and communities to explore how water connects ecosystems, infrastructure, landscapes and communities.
“It is a pleasure to support very unique artistic creations developed so differently to one another, even from the same learnings and experiences with researchers,” said curator and co-founder Valeria Ceregini. “I enjoy the challenge of bringing these visions to the public in an intriguing manner!”
“Water is one of the world’s greatest powers and mysteries and will serve as a brilliant topic for How It’s Made and how humans are a part of nature, not separate,” said Eamonn Donlyn, chairperson of SCÉAL Collective and Smart Balbriggan researcher at Trinity College.
The event will run in Swords Castle Friday November 5th through Sunday November 8th from 10am to 5pm daily. The Balbriggan exhibit will be open in The Lark Concert Hall from Sunday November 8th through Friday November 13th from 12pm until 8pm each day.
