8000 trees to be handed out on Fingal for National Tree Week 2026
With National Tree Week set to get underway this Sunday (8 March 2026), Fingal County Council is building on its ambitious countywide tree‑planting program, which has already delivered more than 60,000 trees across the county since 2019. Throughout this year’s event, the Council has announced it will give away a further 8,000 free trees for residents to plant in their own communities, helping to strengthen local biodiversity and expand Fingal’s growing tree canopy.
This year we are providing a wider range of tree species in our give away including native and non- native trees. This will not only help increase the species diversity across Fingal, supporting our efforts to climate proof our tree population but also help with applying the principle of the 'right tree in the right place', particularly when planting in challenging urban locations. Species being handed out this year include Pine, Goat Willow, Hawthorn, Wild Cherry, Crab apple, Hazel, Alder, Walnut, Beech, Hornbeam, Larch, Red Oak & Scarlet Willow.
To mark the 40th anniversary of the Tree Council of Ireland being founded, this year’s National Tree Week programme is being officially launched by President Catherine Connolly at Newbridge House and Demesne - a fitting location whose historic woodlands and heritage landscape reflect the Council’s long‑standing mission to promote and protect Ireland’s trees.
The tree giveaways in Fingal will take place from 10am to 1pm on Wednesday 11th and Saturday 14th of March at these locations: St Catherine’s Park, Millennium Park, Ardgillan Demesne, Malahide Demesne, Racecourse Park, Newbridge Demesne & Ward River Valley.
There is a limit of two trees per household, and the Council is asking people to consider which type of tree is suitable for their garden. To help reduce use of plastic, please also bring your own bag to transport the tree to your home.
Kevin Halpenny, Fingal County Council’s Senior Parks and Landscape Officer commented: "Since 2019, we’ve distributed more than 60,000 trees to residents and community groups across Fingal, reflecting our strong commitment to protecting and enhancing the county’s 2,300 hectares of public open space. We’re encouraging everyone to get involved -by planting at home or joining local community initiatives - to help boost tree cover, increase species diversity, and enjoy the many benefits that trees bring."
A number of community planting days, workshops and hands on environmental activities will also take place, offering residents of all ages a chance to get involved, learn more, and celebrate the vital role trees play in creating a greener, healthier Fingal. Fingal has around 2,300 hectares of public open space, much of it made up of heritage landscapes shaped by woodlands and mature trees. The Council is committed to ensuring that communities across the county can continue to enjoy these valuable natural assets for generations to come. By planting trees at home, residents can enjoy the beauty, wellbeing benefits and environmental impact they bring, while helping to safeguard our shared environment.
