Council decides not to nominate

Councillors decided at a special meeting last Friday not to nominate anybody to seek election as President of Ireland.

Gareth Sheridan and Maria Steen had each secured the support of four councillors to be considered for nomination by Fingal County Council.

Both had an opportunity to address the meeting and then answered questions afterwards from councillors.

The initial vote to identify a nominee saw Gareth Sheridan defeat Maria Steen by seven votes to four with 18 abstentions.

Mr Sheridan was then proposed as the nominee to stand in the forthcoming Presidential election but councillors chose by 18 votes to seven not to nominate.
