Safety appeal issued ahead of St Brigid’s Bank Holiday weekend
Fingal County Council is reminding residents to put safety first throughout the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday weekend. With increased travel, seasonal swims and celebrations expected, the Council is urging everyone to remain vigilant amid changing weather and road conditions.

Road Safety – Plan ahead and drive responsibly
With road traffic expected to increase over the long weekend, please make responsible choices. Slow down, don’t drive distracted, don’t drive intoxicated, and always wear a seatbelt.
Before you celebrate:
- Designate a driver.
- Plan public transport routes or walk where it is safe to do so.
- Book taxis in advance.
On the road:
- Never drink and drive or use drugs and drive.
- Always wear your seatbelt and ensure all passengers are buckled up.
- Slow down, especially in poor weather or low light.
- Pull in safely and rest if you feel drowsy.
- Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
- Check tyres, lights, wipers and fluid levels before travelling.
- Watch for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists.
Water Safety Appeal
Following recent storms and unsettled weather, the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are advising the public to take extra caution around coastlines and waterways.
If swimming this weekend:
- Water temperatures remain cold. Wear a wetsuit, bright swim cap and gloves.
- Acclimatise slowly and use a tow float for visibility.
- Never swim alone. Ensure someone is monitoring from the shore.
- Do not enter the water if conditions appear rough, murky or unpredictable.
If you see someone in difficulty, call 112 or 999 or use VHF Channel 16 and ask for the Coast Guard. More information: Water Safety Ireland – Public awareness and education on water safety.
Fingal County Council encourages everyone to enjoy the St Brigid’s Bank Holiday weekend safely by staying informed, planning ahead and looking out for one another.
