The best-quality beaches along the Fingal coastline have been announced today by An Taisce at this year’s National Blue Flag and Green Coast Awards event held at Donabate.
The meeting took place following the recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announcement of an all-season bathing advisoryfor Front Strand Beach in Balbriggan and the poor-quality bathing water experienced at times last year.
Local authorities must identify official bathing areas in their area every year so that they can be monitored for safety, water quality and their level of use.

This is a temporary public health notice advising the public of the potential risk of illness due to the ‘Poor’ classification -it is not a ban on swimming or a closure of the beach.
Please be advised that Blue Flag Beaches in Fingal - Donabate, Rush South and Portmarnock - have a prohibition on dogs, with the exception of assistance dogs, in the blue flag area from 01st June -15th September between the hours of 11am to 7pm.
Dog owners are being encouraged to be responsible by bagging and binning their pets poo when using the county’s many beaches. Failure to do so could see access stopped.
There have been sightings of Lions Mane jellyfish at some of our beaches. These jellyfish may also be spotted at our other beaches over the coming weeks.
This is brown foam which is seen on our beaches from time to time. It is called surf foam or surf scum. It can be easily mistaken for pollution, but it isn’t. It is a collection of millions of microscopic algae (bloom) and is a natural phenomenon. They need sunlight to grow and attach to the bubbles in the surf causing foaming.
