Community Composting and Leaf-mould initiatives

As a part of our climate action initiatives, Fingal County Council regularly supports a variety of community composting projects throughout the year, including:
1.Leaf Mould Project
To All Fingal Community Groups-
Wondering what to do with all of those autumn leaves?
Do you want to make a lovely weed-free compost for use within your community?
Are you ready to turn a ‘waste’ into a valuable resource to combat climate change?
If so, Fingal County Council is offering community organisations and neighbourhood associations with the opportunity to participate in this year’s community leaf mould composting project. This is Community Climate Action!!
Based on the success of last year’s leaf mould composting project, the initiative is being expanded this year to include new communities and support groups that participated last year. This is being offered free of charge:
- Online Zoom training workshop (mandatory) on how to make leaf mould to be held on Wednesday October 4th from 7:30 - 8:30 pm
- Site visit to assist your community/ housing estates with selecting appropriate sites and setting up and starting your leaf mould cages.
- Free leaf mould cages, watering-can and pitch-fork.

Application deadline is Sunday October 1, 2023. Spaces are limited so applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

2. Community Composting Training
Tidy Towns groups, allotments, community organisations and resident associations have participated in funded training that has helped community organisations set up composting systems for mainly garden and landscape materials.
3. Composting for Schools
This pilot programme works with Fingal based schools to reduce waste, improve recycling and help start or expand on-site composting systems in our schools. Many schools have set up wormeries for composting food waste to help students learn about biology, ecology, biodiversity and sustainability.
