Heritage Week

Heritage Week 2021 Launched

Open the door to heritage is the message from the Heritage Council as National Heritage Week 2021 is launched.  Culture and heritage groups, as well as communities, families and individuals in Fingal are invited to get involved and celebrate and share heritage. National Heritage Week will run from Saturday, 14th to Sunday, 22nd August, and has become one of Ireland’s largest cultural heritage events.

Howth

Coastguard Safety Signage Howth Completed

Fingal County Council are delighted to announce, in partnership with the Irish Coast Guard and Howth SAAO Committee, that a new safety initiative for Howth has been completed. The innovative network of safety signage is now in place on the Howth Looped Paths walking trails.

Commemorations Programme 2021

The Commemoration of The Burning of the Coast Guard Buildings

On the 21st of June 2021, Fingal County Council will commemorate this local historic event by launching a Fingal Libraries exhibition entitled The Burning of the Coastguard Buildings which will be displayed in  Skerries Church, Rush Library and  the Atrium, County Hall Swords. The Council’s Arts Department will also launch a unique bespoke writing commission entitled “a Burning Tide” in partnership with the Irish Writers Centre, in which six renowned authors will, in their own unique style, produce six modern writing pieces which will represent their interpretation of the events that transpired on the night of the 18th June 1921.

The RIC V IRA Altercation at Ballyboughal 18th April 1921

Fingal County Council in partnership with FOIRA (Fingal Old Irish Republican Army Commemorative society), the descendants of  the fatally wounded RIC officer and IRA volunteer are working in collaboration with the people of Ballyboughal to produce a high-quality re-enactment video/documentary which will not only commemorate those who lost their lives on the 18th April, 1921 it will provide a historical reference that will be used to promote a deeper understanding of this local legacy which was significant to the Irish Republican Army movement which was growing in strength,
