Heritage

All buildings have a value – even of only as embodied energy and through this asset all buildings have potential; that can be realised by imagination, coupled with the setting of high design standards.

Sustainable Swords Heritage

Historic structures are buildings of high value that have been preserved, sometimes long after they have ceased to be useful. Sometimes their use is lying dormant – awaiting new purpose that can be given by innovative change or bold intervention. Contemporary buildings of high architectural merit are the historic buildings and protected structures of the future, they will be retained, treasured and periodically upgraded to give them new life, purpose and meaning.

Placemaking and high-quality public realm needs to be woven into the fabric of the town, within and around those buildings of quality from all ages. Good urban design creates beauty and usefulness – safe, vibrant streetscapes and urban parks in which to live, work, shop, engage with others and relax.

The project team are undertaking a heritage audit of Swords town centre to better understand the assets of the existing urban fabric and opportunities for re-use and of where heritage buildings can be better integrated, maximising place-making opportunities.
