Help Shape the Future of Community Transport in Fingal
Have Your Say on the Expansion of the Fingal Community Car
Fingal County Council is inviting residents, community groups and local organisations to have their say on the future expansion of the Fingal Community Car.
The Fingal Community Car is a community transport service that supports people who may have difficulty accessing essential services and activities due to limited transport options. The scheme helps people remain connected, independent and active within their communities by providing access to important appointments, services and social activities.
The scheme was first piloted in Howth and Skerries in 2019 through a partnership between Fingal County Council, Local Link and volunteer drivers. The service continues to operate successfully in the Skerries area, helping local people access:
- Medical and hospital appointments
- GP and healthcare services
- Shopping and banking facilities
- Community and social activities
- Other essential local services
The Fingal Community Car facilitated more than 1000 passenger journeys during the first six months of 2026, demonstrating the value of community-led transport in supporting residents to access essential services and remain connected within their communities.
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy said: ’’Access to transport can have a significant impact on a person's ability to participate fully in community life. Whether it is attending a medical appointment, meeting friends, taking part in local activities or accessing essential services, reliable transport helps people stay connected and engaged. I encourage everyone to take part in this consultation and share their insights to help inform the future development of the Fingal Community Car.’’
The consultation will help Fingal County Council identify communities that could benefit from the scheme, better understand local travel patterns and journeys and gauge interest from residents who may be willing to support the service as volunteers.
David Storey, Director of Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel and Sport at Fingal County Council said: "The Fingal Community Car has proven to be a valuable service, helping people access healthcare, community services and social activities while reducing transport barriers. As we consider the next phase of the scheme's development, it is important that we hear directly from local communities about where the need exists and how the service can best support residents."
