Green Convenience: Fingal opens new Eco Toilets at popular coastal locations
Fingal County Council’s Operations Department is delighted to announce the rollout of eight new, environmentally friendly public toilets at key hotspots along the coast—marking a major step forward in enhancing amenities for residents and visitors while advancing sustainability goals.
Two eco-friendly toilet units have been installed at Skerries Red Island Playground and are open to the public from today (Friday, 12 June). A further six eco toilets have been installed at Donabate Beach Car Park and Portrane Beach and will be available for use from this weekend. The introduction of these facilities represents a significant upgrade to public amenities in some of Fingal’s most popular outdoor and coastal destinations, improving accessibility and convenience for all users. Each location includes an accessible unit, ensuring that the facilities are inclusive and usable by everyone in the community.
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O’Leary welcomed the new amenities: “These new eco-friendly facilities are a fantastic addition to some of Fingal’s most treasured coastal and recreational areas. They reflect our commitment to protecting our environment while making our public spaces more accessible, comfortable, and enjoyable for everyone.
“The new facilities will benefit a wide range of users in the Skerries area, including swimmers, sauna users, visitors, families enjoying the nearby playground, and the many walkers who use the coastal pathways around Red Island. The installations also complement planned upgrades for the area later this year, including the development of a Red Island loop cycle route and enhanced walking paths.”
Designed with sustainability at their core, the eco toilet systems operate entirely off-grid, requiring no connection to sewerage or electricity. Free from chemicals and built to be 100% ecological, the units offer a reliable, low-impact solution. Their robust construction also ensures durability, ease of maintenance, and a consistently high standard of hygiene.
Director of Operations, Sinéad Murphy highlighted the importance of the coastal rollout: “This project demonstrates how practical infrastructure can also be environmentally responsible. By investing in sustainable, off-grid solutions, we are enhancing vital amenities while supporting Fingal’s broader climate and sustainability objectives.”
This initiative forms part of Fingal County Council’s ongoing programme of public realm improvements and environmental actions. The Council remains committed to developing sustainable, inclusive, and welcoming spaces that enrich the lives of all who live in, work in, and visit Fingal.
