Fingal County Council, and the National Transport Authority, launch a 2023 programme of events for national Bike Week.

Bike Week takes place this May from Saturday 13 to Sunday 21, with a variety of events celebrating the simple joy of cycling. Fingal County Council has launched a packed programme with events to satisfy experienced cyclists, families, schools, older people and those with additional needs.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Howard Mahony, says Bike Week is becoming a key event in the annual calendar of Fingal events. ‘This year we’re planning our biggest and best Bike Week yet and we’re welcoming everyone to come along and get involved. Whether you’re a novice with a rusty bike in the shed, a busy parent with kids to keep entertained or a someone who has never been able to access cycling due to a disability we have something for you. Our Active Travel unit are looking forward to a very busy week out in the community offering everyone the chance to enjoy a positive cycling experience so do come along and get involved.’

Fingal County Council’s Director of Environment, Climate Action and Active Travel, David Storey says cycling is a great choice for those who care about the future of Fingal. ‘Choosing to walk or cycle even one day a week has a very positive impact on our climate, your community, and your health. Bike Week is the perfect time to either get back on your bike or try Active Travel for the first time. You don’t need to consider yourself a cyclist to try out a bike!’

Fingal County Council will be working with schools across the county to encourage children to get pedalling during Bike Week as well as running a packed event programme for the general public. All events are free of charge and open to everyone. Events include two family fun days to take place in Blanchardstown and Malahide, an inclusive cycling come and try day for children and adults with physical and intellectual disabilities, a sunset social cycle in the Phoenix Park, BMX workshops for primary schools and a mass community cycle from Baldoyle to Howth. Most events don’t require reservations and details of meeting points and start times can be found at www.fingal.ie/bikeweek

All 31 local authority areas are involved in Bike Week with events being organised jointly through the local authorities and local sports partnerships.

Anne Graham, CEO of the NTA said: “The engagement from the local authorities and local sports partnerships has been fantastic again this year and it’s great to see so many events taking place all around the country.

“There really is something for everyone, from the popular family bike festivals and community cycles, to local heritage and greenway cycles to schools events.  I’d encourage everybody to get involved.”
