Fingal Sports Office Marks Women in Sport Week with ‘HerMoves Exercise: Energise’ Multi Sports and Activity Day in Abbotstown

More than 300 teenage girls from secondary and community schools across Fingal have taken part in the annual HerMoves Exercise: Energise Multi Sports and Activity Day at the National Indoor Arena, Abbotstown. The event was part of Women in Sport Week 2026.

The event brought together participants from the Fingal Sports Office’s Women in Sport Exercise: Energise programme for a full day of sport, fun, and physical activity. Now in its 14th year, the programme continues to provide an essential pathway for inactive girls to build confidence, increase physical activity levels, and access new sporting opportunities.

Twelve schools enrolled in the programme for the 2025–2026 academic year, with students taking part in a range of activities—including cheerleading, self-defence, and gym-based workouts—during lunchtime and after-school sessions. Importantly, all activities are selected by the girls themselves, ensuring that the programme remains participant-led and engaging.

Speaking at the event, Cllr Tom Kitt, Chairperson of the Fingal Sports Partnership, said: “It’s inspiring to see so many young women taking part with such enthusiasm. The energy and confidence on display in Abbotstown demonstrated the real impact of programmes that listened to girls, supported their choices, and helped them find joy in being active. The Fingal Sports Partnership is proud to champion initiatives that open doors, build community, and inspire lifelong involvement in sport for every young woman across Fingal.”

This year’s event was supported by twelve National Governing Bodies, whose development officers delivered expert coaching and “come and try” sessions across a diverse range of sports including Rugby, Cricket, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Athletics, Table Tennis, Rowing, Volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Tennis. For the first time, participants also had the opportunity to try Fencing, which proved a popular addition to the line-up.

Fingal Sports Development Officer Caitríona Geraghty emphasised the importance of ensuring that girls have welcoming, accessible routes into sport, saying:

“Fingal Sports Office is committed to ensuring that young women have positive experiences in sport. Today’s event offers fun, variety, and a welcoming environment where every girl can discover an activity she enjoys.”

The HerMoves Exercise: Energise Multi Sports and Activity Day continues to highlight Fingal’s commitment to inclusion, community participation, and promoting lifelong involvement in physical activity for young women.
