Fingal Seeks Public Feedback on Front of School Improvements in Skerries

Fingal County Council has launched a public consultation on proposed Front of School Interventions at Skerries Community College and St Patrick's Junior and Senior National Schools as part of the Skerries Active Travel Plan.

The proposed measures are designed to improve safety for children travelling to and from school, reduce congestion around school entrances, encourage more students to walk and cycle, and create safer, more accessible routes for the wider community.

The proposed works include:

St Patrick's Junior and Senior National Schools

  • Resurfacing the approaches to both schools with a textured buff-coloured surface.
  • Installation of two new zebra crossings on New Street and Dublin Road.
  • New road markings and signage.
  • Footpath upgrades.

Skerries Community College

  • Construction of a raised table at the school entrance finished with a buff-coloured textured surface.
  • New footpaths and road markings.
  • Installation of five new zebra crossings, including one on Balbriggan Road.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy, said: "We want every child in Fingal to be able to travel to and from school safely and confidently. These proposed improvements for Skerries Community College and St Patrick's Junior and Senior National Schools will make walking and cycling more attractive, improve safety at school gates and create a better environment for students, parents, guardians and the wider community.’’

The scheme will improve accessibility, create safer school environments and increase driver awareness of school zones, benefiting students, families and the wider community. The proposals are being advanced as part of Fingal County Council's commitment to making it safer and easier for people to walk, wheel and cycle, particularly for school journeys.

Breen Doris, A/Senior Engineer Fingal County Council’s Active Travel Unit, said: "These proposals are an important step in delivering the Skerries Active Travel Plan and enhancing the environment around local schools. The planned improvements have been informed by national design guidance and are intended to support safer, more comfortable journeys for everyone travelling through the area. We encourage the public to review the proposals and share their feedback during the consultation period."
