Fingal County Council Sports Office has completed a 12-week online SportsCon For All programme with the Daughters of Charity Disability Service.

The programme supported Fingal’s approach of providing inclusive opportunities for people with additional needs.

The classes organised by the Sports Office took place every Monday under the tutelage of Linda Dungan who took the 30 participants through their paces with progressive chair and mobility exercises.

The Daughters of Charity service users will continue activities over the summer months engaging with the Sports Offices’ ‘Digifit For All’ exercise programme and ‘Cycle Right Training’ provided for staff to help service users learn to cycle.

The strength and mobility levels of the group progressed every week, while the social element of the programme provided another genuine benefit for the service users.

Mayor of Fingal Cllr David Healy said: “Sport and physical activity are very important in bringing communities and individuals together in positive ways, which is why a focus on inclusivity and accessibility for people of all abilities and needs is so important. I welcome the continuing relationship between Fingal’s Sports Office and the Daughters of Charity group and service users.”

Chief Executive Ann Marie Farrelly said: “Fingal County Council strives to provide inclusive physical activity opportunities through the Sports Office as we recognise how tough the last year has been, particularly for people with disabilities”.

Sinead O’Carroll from the Daughters of Charity said: “The SportsCon For All online programme was a tool for social interaction where service users were able to meet their friends online at a time when the COVID pandemic severely restricted their activities and ability to socialise.

“The Sports Office has provided our participants with not just an exercise programme but a social and fun integration tool”.
