2027 Architectural Conservation Funding Schemes Open for Applications

Fingal County Council is inviting owners and custodians of historic buildings to apply for funding for works to be undertaken in 2027 to repair and conserve Fingal’s historic building stock.

 

Fingal’s historic building stock contributes significantly to the character of the towns, village and rural areas of the county.  Maintaining it in good repair and active use safeguards it for the future and is central to meeting sustainability goals and climate action objectives.  Fingal’s Architectural Conservation Officers, Helena Bergin and Bronagh Lanigan, have worked with numerous owners over the years to carry out essential repairs to their properties or to establish cycles of routine maintenance to keep buildings in good condition.  The conservation funding schemes exist to aid owners with the appropriate detailing and correct methods to repair the historic materials used in older buildings such as lime, stone, hand-made brick, thatch, natural slate, and historic joinery as the use of modern rigid and non-breathable materials such as concrete and plastics can do more harm than good.  Funding is also available through Fingal’s Stitch in Time Grant to engage experienced conservation professionals to produce conservation reports that will identify required works and recommend appropriate methodologies for repairs, and in certain cases specify the exact works.  

 

Fingal’s Conservation Office expects that over €600,000 in conservation funding will be drawn down by the end of 2026 through a variety of schemes it administers.  These include the national funding streams of Built Heritage Investment Scheme, Historic Thatched Buildings BHIS Stream, and Historic Structures Fund, along with Fingal’s own Stitch in Time Grant.   Christopher O’Sullivan TD, Minister of State for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, has launched the 2027 schemes of Built Heritage Investment Scheme (BHIS), Historic Structures Fund (HSF) and Historic Thatch Buildings (HTB) and Fingal County Council is now accepting applications under all of the schemes for works to be undertaken in 2027.

 

The Stitch in Time Grant is for small amounts of funding up to a max grant of €2,500.  The Built Heritage Investment Scheme funding is for medium sized grants, while the Historic Structures Fund is for large scale projects.

Completed applications should be sent to the Architectural Conservation Officer of Fingal County Council at  [email protected]   It is important to note that different closing dates apply to the schemes so applicants need to take care to meet the correct closing date for the scheme they are applying for.

 

A decision will issue in early 2027 to all successful applications. Please note that applicants cannot avail of funding under both the Historic Structures Fund and the Built Heritage Investment Scheme in the same year and so if applying for both and are successful then can only accept one of them.
