for the Royal Canal Urban Greenway

The Royal Canal Urban Greenway is an approximately 8.1 km shared pedestrian and cycle route extending from the Kildare County Council boundary to Talbot Bridge at the Old Navan Road, where it will connect with the completed Ashtown Greenway. The route runs along and adjacent to the Royal Canal through west Dublin 15. The proposed development follows the Royal Canal corridor from the Fingal/Kildare County boundary in the west to Talbot Bridge at the Old Navan Road in the east. It passes through and serves the Clonsilla, Coolmine, Castleknock and Blanchardstown areas and connects with completed greenway infrastructure at both ends.

Description of Nature and Extent of the Proposed Development and its Principal Features:

  1. Construction of an approximately 8.1 km shared pedestrian and cycle greenway extending from the Kildare County Council boundary to Talbot Bridge at the Old Navan Road.
  2. Provision of a generally 2–3 m wide unbound surface from the Kildare County boundary to Hansfield Railway Bridge.
  3. Provision of a generally 3–4 m wide bituminous route from Hansfield Railway Bridge to Kennan Bridge, including a precast concrete cantilevered boardwalk.
  4. Provision of a generally 4 m wide bituminous route from Kennan Bridge to Talbot Bridge, with in-situ concrete surfacing and raised boardwalks where required by local topography.
  5. Construction of embankments and retaining structures at locations where required to stabilise ground conditions and support the greenway alignment.
  6. Provision of three toucan signal-controlled crossings and one zebra crossing at road interfaces along the route.
  7. Provision of public lighting between Hansfield Railway Bridge and the 12th Lock, with the western rural section remaining unlit.
  8. Ground level adjustments adjoining Delwood Park, including lowering of the greenway and provision of a 2 m high timber palisade fence with anti-climb mesh.
  9. Construction of Quarry Bridge, comprising a 30 m single-span composite steel beam and concrete deck bridge, together with associated boardwalk sections.
  10. Provision of privacy planting and railings along the Brompton green area to supplement the existing boundary treatment.
  11. Construction of Landmark Bridge across the Royal Canal, together with associated ramped approaches.
  12. Construction of an underpass beneath Castleknock Road on the southern side of Granard Bridge.
  13. Development of a pocket park at Hansfield incorporating a wildflower meadow, native hedgerow, informal play features, seating and associated landscaping.
  14. Removal of two residential properties and associated ancillary structures near Hansfield Road to facilitate the greenway alignment and pocket park.
  15. Landscape and reinstatement work, including removal of selected trees, hedgerows and vegetation where required, replacement planting, drainage, utilities, fencing, boundaries, signage, road markings, traffic signals, temporary compounds and construction access arrangements.
