Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy, alongside Minister for Transport and Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment, Darragh O'Brien TD, today marked a major milestone in the delivery of the New Street Public Realm Enhancement Project, which will transform the heart of Malahide village centre.

The scheme will enhance one of Malahide's most important public spaces, creating a high-quality environment for residents, businesses and visitors. Designed to prioritise people while balancing the needs of different users, it will support the continued vitality of the area.

Located at The Diamond, New Street has operated as a pedestrianised space since 2020. Building on the success of that initiative, Fingal County Council has developed a public realm scheme that complements the recently enhanced Village Green.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy said: "The commencement of works on New Street marks an exciting moment for Malahide. This project will transform the heart of the village into an even more welcoming and attractive destination, creating a vibrant civic space where residents and visitors can meet, relax and enjoy everything Malahide has to offer."

The project will deliver accessible pedestrian surfaces, upgraded paving and public lighting, new seating, cycle parking, outdoor dining areas and enhanced landscaping. It will also include the planting of 37 new trees, sustainable urban drainage features, upgraded water and drainage infrastructure, loading bays and an accessible parking space, creating a more welcoming and vibrant destination for residents and visitors.

Fingal County Council has appointed Maylim Limited to deliver the project, with construction expected to commence in the coming weeks. Works are anticipated to take approximately 16 months to complete and will be carefully phased to minimise disruption, with planned breaks during the busy summer and Christmas periods.

Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly said: “The New Street Public Realm Enhancement Project reflects Fingal County Council's commitment to delivering attractive, people-focused public spaces. This scheme will build on the success of the pedestrianisation project and strengthen Malahide's unique character for generations to come."

Pedestrian access along the street will be maintained at all times, with access to homes and businesses remaining in place throughout the construction period. A dedicated business liaison officer will work directly with affected businesses and property owners as the project progresses.

Director of Services for Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel & Sport at Fingal County Council, David Storey said: "This project demonstrates how investment in public spaces can support both placemaking and sustainable travel. The enhanced public realm will make it easier and more enjoyable for people to move around without relying on a car, supporting everyday activity and helping to create a more sustainable village centre."

The public realm improvements for New Street will also complement Malahide's position at the centre of Fingal's proposed greenway network, with the village set to be connected to the Broadmeadow Way and the Sutton to Malahide Greenway.

Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment and Minister for Transport, Darragh O'Brien TD said: "Projects such as this demonstrate the value of investing in high-quality public spaces that improve the everyday experience of our towns and villages. The New Street Public Realm Enhancement Project will help create a safer, more accessible and attractive environment in the centre of Malahide, supporting active travel, local businesses and community wellbeing while enhancing the character of the area for future generations."
