Restored historical pond St Ita's Portrane

Wetland restoration works have been completed at St Ita's in Portrane on both sides of the Donabate Distributor Road.

The works included the removal of two redundant construction haul roads, the creation of several new ponds and the restoration of a historical pond.

Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer with Fingal County Council said: “The restoration of the wetland at St Ita's is one of the actions in the Fingal Climate Action and it is great to see that completed. The restoration is also part of a bigger project to develop a new nature reserve at St Ita's together with the HSE which is one of the priority actions in the new Fingal Biodiversity Plan. Most of the restored land will be allowed to recolonise naturally, but we will also  be organising some tree planting this winter. The historic wetland that was restored has already attracted a range of new plants and animals”.

This project received financial support from the National Parks & Wildlife Service under the National Biodiversity Action Plan.
