Major boost for Portmarnock as Council approves €500k to restore PSLC swimming pool
A €500,000 investment has been approved by Fingal County Council to support essential refurbishment works at the PSLC swimming pool, marking a major step forward in restoring this important community facility. Closed since March 2026 due to the discovery of significant structural issues, the planned works will help pave the way for the pool’s safe and timely reopening.
The PSLC swimming pool is a key public amenity serving the local community, providing access to swimming, recreational activities, school programmes, club usage, and rehabilitation services. The facility plays an important role in promoting physical activity, enhancing public health, and supporting overall community wellbeing.
The closure has had a considerable and ongoing impact on the community, particularly through the loss of public swimming provision and disruption to associated programmes and services.
The funding approved by Fingal County Council will support a programme of urgent works proposed by PSLC, including:
· Structural repairs to the roof and associated waterproofing
· Priority remedial works to the pool tank and drainage infrastructure
· Essential health and safety upgrades
· Enabling works to facilitate the timely delivery of the project
Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly, said: “This significant investment underlines our commitment to restoring the PSLC swimming pool as a safe, modern and vibrant facility for the community. We know how important this key amenity is for health, wellbeing, recreation and learning, and these essential works will pave the way for its reopening at the earliest opportunity. By supporting this essential refurbishment, we are helping to bring back a much-valued community hub and ensure that it can continue to serve local families, schools and clubs for many years to come.”
Director of Services, David Storey, added: “PSLC plays a vital role in delivering inclusive and accessible services, from learn-to-swim programmes to rehabilitation supports. The works now required are substantial but necessary to ensure the long-term viability of the facility. This investment will enable critical repairs to proceed without delay and is a key step towards restoring an important community asset for current and future users.”
The Council’s intervention is aimed at preventing the permanent loss of a critical community amenity, addressing significant safety concerns, and avoiding further deterioration of key infrastructure. It will also help reduce future maintenance liabilities and support the restoration of essential community services.
Works are expected to commence as soon as possible, subject to final project arrangements, with the objective of reopening the facility at the earliest opportunity.
