Fingal confirms contractor for delivery of key strategic project in Swords
Fingal County Council has appointed Murphy as the contractor for the R132 Connectivity Project in Swords and signed the multi-million contract today at County Hall. This major project is being funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA).
The works are expected to take 25 months to complete and will be carried out in four phases along the 3km route from the Bostik junction to the edge of the Pinnock Hill roundabout. The first phase, which is expected to last six months, will see the Estuary roundabout being replaced by a safer four-point junction.
Speaking at today’s contract signing the Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O’Leary, said: “This is a very important project for Swords, making the road safer for vulnerable road users, improving east-west connectivity in the town and paving the way for MetroLink and a more frequent and efficient Busconnects system, its a win win project for Swords.”
When completed, the key strategic project will improve connectivity within Swords and make the R132 safer with more accessible facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.
Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly, said: “A town is continually changing. Over the next twenty years, the population of Swords is projected to double, and this will require careful planning to manage growth effectively. The R132 project is an important element in supporting that development, and it is a key action within the Sustainable Swords Strategy to ensure the town can accommodate future needs.”
Director of Infrastructure and Transport Matthew McAleese said: “The objective of this scheme is to change the character and function of the R132 from a primary distributor road to a high-capacity urban street with defined crossing points which will make the road safer for all road users especially vulnerable road users. A lot of planning work has already been done behind the scenes to minimise traffic impacts and keep Swords open for business.”
Eoin Gillard, Assistant Director for NTA Transport Investment said; “The National Transport Authority is pleased to support the R132 Connectivity Project, which both improves safety for pedestrians and cyclists while integrating with the rollout of BusConnects and MetroLink to deliver more sustainable, accessible transport.”
The project contractor, Murphy, is a multi-disciplinary transportation specialist delivering sustainable infrastructure solutions on an international scale. Recent projects include the Clonburris Southern Link Street for South Dublin County Council.
On being appointed to the project, John G Murphy, Managing Director of Murphy said “These vital works represent the first step in delivering major future infrastructure - including the Swords Main Street Transformation, BusConnects from the city centre to Swords, and MetroLink - all of which will significantly enhance connectivity and accessibility in the Swords area.”
