Councillors give green light for Skerries transformation

Skerries Harbour Road and Red Island is set to be transformed after Councillors gave the green light for Fingal County Council to proceed with active travel and public realm improvement measures at the Council’s monthly meeting on Monday. Councillors voted in favour of granting Part XI and Part VIII planning permission for the development which will enhance the public realm and improve pedestrian and cycling safety in a very popular area of the county.
Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Brian McDonagh stated: “Active travel is an essential component of climate change. It works towards a greener future where we are less reliant on cars to get to and from our destinations in a safe manner.”
The transformation to the area will include:
- Creating improved footpaths and more inviting public spaces to enhance the village’s distinctive character and unique coastal setting.
- Pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure.
- Enhanced safety and accessibility.
- Improving road safety for vulnerable road users.
The scheme also aims to streamline parking and improve pathways for better connectivity and smoother movement throughout the area. These upgrades will enhance the much-loved Skerries peninsula into a more pedestrian-friendly, accessible, and safe space that promotes social interaction and active travel through place-making and public realm enhancements.
The provision of placemaking together with active travel infrastructure will enhance the public realm in an area which is identified as high scenic quality and as a destination point for people who will use the local public transport links and mobility initiatives.
David Storey, Director of Environment, Climate Action, Active Travel and Sport at Fingal County Council highlighted the significance of the response to the vote: “This backing for the project sends a clear and positive message that Fingal is embracing a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure - one that prioritises walking, wheeling, and cycling. These improvements mark a significant step towards creating safer, more accessible, and more vibrant public spaces for everyone.
The plans for Harbour Road and Red Island, which were presented to Councillors for approval were arrived at following extensive public consultation, with input from residents, stakeholders and community groups in the area.
Fingal County Council Chief Executive, AnnMarie Farrelly said: “I would like to commend the people of Skerries who turned out and worked together extensively with the Active Travel Unit at every consultation meeting on this project. The extensive research helped shape the final design process that was voted on at the Council meeting. I feel that this collaboration between the Council, community and stakeholders has resulted in a magnificent shared space for locals and visitors to enjoy and share with future generations.”
The Council’s Active Travel Unit will now proceed to final design and the procurement of a contractor. It is hoped that works will begin in early 2026.
