Fingal Reusable Cup Project

Fingal Reusable Cup Project

Something exciting is brewing in Malahide and Rush, and it’s not just the coffee! Fingal County Council are embarking on ambitious mission to make Fingal disposable cup free and taking meaningful climate action to help our environment.

This summer, Rush and Malahide are joining a growing movement to tackle packaging waste, starting with one of the biggest everyday offenders: the single-use (disposable) coffee cup. Inspired by the hugely successful Killarney Cup Project (which kept over 1 million cups out of the bin in just one year!), Fingal County Council are supporting our communities as we say “no more” to throwaway culture.

It's easy to support this project, all you have to do is say no to disposable cups. You could sit-in (and drink from a real cup), bring your own reusable cup, or if you forget your cup then borrow a VYTAL cup, for free!

Reusables are the future, however reusable packaging currently makes up only 2% of all packaging in Ireland. To change this, we need bold, community-led action and this project is a clear step in that direction.

Reusable cup systems, like that now launched in Fingal, offer a practical and sustainable alternative to single-use cups by significantly reducing waste, lowering carbon emissions, and conserving resources. Alongside this, they support a circular economy by promoting the repeated use of durable products, can help cut down the amount of litter in public spaces, and also encourage more environmentally conscious consumer habits.

Plastic packaging recycling rates remain low, with a large amount of plastic packaging waste incinerated, thereby contributing significantly to carbon emissions. Disposable cups may appear to be made of paper, but they are typically lined with a thin layer of plastic which makes them difficult to recycle through standard systems.
