Fingal County Council’s Arts Office is pleased to announce the presentation of new artwork by Fingal artist Adam Gibney – Tidal Composition 1: Fall and Rise. This project was funded through Fingal County Council’s Public Art Programme – Infrastructure under the scheme’s Public Art Award category.
On Thursday 15th May, we invite you to experience the culmination of Tidal Composition 1: Fall and Rise. Central to this project is the SALIE (Sound and Light Interactive Emitter) network - a technological bridge between the Irish Sea and our inner emotional landscapes. This new artwork will be launched as part of this years ‘Hello How Are You?’ Event organised by Thrive Balbriggan in conjunction with partner organisations and individuals.
Adam worked with Thrive Balbriggan and Empower to facilitate engagement with their WRAP Programme participants who brought the SALIE’s and the calming, meditative properties of the sea into their homes. Adam and writer Louise Lewis invited the participants to write thoughts and create images inspired by their interactions with the artwork through a series of workshops. Their words and experiences have formed a beautiful collective poem, the words of which will be visible as a multi-screen installation on Balbriggan beach.
Mayor of Fingal Cllr Brian McDonagh commented “The ‘Hello, How Are You?’ campaign event in Balbriggan has huge value in creating a greater awareness of the range of supports available to ensure connection, combat isolation and build a thriving community in Balbriggan. The inclusion of Adam’s Tidal Composition is testament to the potential of these services to build meaningful connections through engagement with the arts”
Hello, How are You? Programme, an annual event organised in partnership with Mental Health Ireland and local organisations such as Thrive Balbriggan and Empower and supported by Fingal County Council’s library and community departments The campaign asks individuals, communities, workplaces, friends & family to say ‘Hello’ and ask the question ‘How Are You?’ in a meaningful way! The campaign aims to inspire people to ask how others are feeling, opening up a conversation to allow people to listen and Fosters connections with the community. On Thursday 15th of May Thrive Balbriggan members will have pop up stalls at the BEAT Centre, Lidl and Millfield SC, and welcome the community to come along and chat with members of Thrive Balbriggan. There is also an inclusive Connect Café in Cairde, Music performed at the Our Balbriggan Hub followed by a reception at Hamilton Hall, Balbriggan Library.
Tidal Composition will be introduced by Adam as part of the ‘Walk & Talk’ at Empower and a three-week pop-up exhibition at Balbriggan Library will offer deeper insights into the SALIE consoles and the textual output from the project. Visitors will have the opportunity to borrow a SALIE for one-week periods, bringing this experimental sea-to-self transmission into their own homes and personal spaces. The installation will remain on the beach from the 15th May – 18th of May.
Artist Adam Gibney contemplates on the work "From the flickering on of light to its flickering off, what matters most is connection—transmission from one human being to another."
Public Art Co-ordinator Caroline Cowley, explains “this work was funded as part of our Public Art Programme and Adam’s proposal was deemed to be innovative and experimental. It’s ambition from the outset was to bring the process right into the communities in Balbriggan and the supports from Thrive, Empower and the Hello How Are You Campaign were central to its successful delivery.”
