Healthy Ireland at your Library is an exciting new service which has developed from the Healthy Ireland initiative and is available free of charge in Fingal County Libraries. As part of this exciting new service, we have a range of FREE talks and workshops relating to various Health and Wellbeing topics. Everyone is welcome to attend however booking is essential as places are limited. Please contact the relevant Library directly to book your place.

September 2018

 

  • FREE Blood Pressure Check at Your Library with the Irish Heart Foundation

Irish Heart Foundation

‌The Irish Heart Foundation  Nurses will be available to provide heart health information and do blood pressure checks. The one-to-one advice offered by the nurse is a vital part of this check. Each person receives a personal record card with their results and in the event of any abnormal results is advised to follow up with their GP. Dates and times of their visit are as follows: 

Blanchardstown Library:   Thursday, 13th September 2018, 9:45am - 5:30pm 
Balbriggan Library:   Friday, 14 September 2018, 10:00am - 2:00pm 


  •  Walk the Walk Workshops with Get Ireland Walking

 Get Ireland Walking

Walking is the easiest way to get moving and get active. Get Ireland Walking is a national initiative that aims to maximise the number of people participating in walking - for health, wellbeing and fitness - throughout Ireland.  In partnership with Healthy Ireland, Sport Ireland and Local Sports Partnerships and as part of European Week of Sport,  Get Ireland Walking are excited to be facilitiating a Walking Workshop, followed by a short walk from the Library. Dates and time for this workshop are as follows:

Swords Library:   Thursday, 27th September, 10.30am – 11.30am
Baldoyle Library: Thursday 27th September, 2:00pm – 3:00pm

  • Dementia Awareness with The Alzheimers Society of Ireland

Alzheimers Society of Ireland

 Fingal Libraries are delighted to have The Alzheimer Society of Ireland  and their Mobile Information Bus attend four of their Libraries in October and November. The service provides information and support to people with dementia and their families. The bus is stocked with information and resources for people looking for information about memory loss, a recent diagnosis, ongoing support available, information for the carer, tips for day to day living and so much more. Dates and times of their visit are as follows: 

Blanchardstown Library: Tuesday, 2nd October 18, 10:00am - 2:00pm
Swords Library: Tuesday, 23rd October 18, 10:00am - 2:00pm 

 

  • Running Talk with Multi World Cross County Medallist and Olympian, Catherina McKiernan

Catherina McKiernan

 

Fingal Libraries are delighted to have Multi World Cross County Medallist and Olympian, Catherina McKiernan as a speaker in Malahide Library. Catherina will talk briefly about her professional running career and what if took to compete against the best in the World and be successful. She will speak and give tips on correct running form and its benefits to prevent injuries, share tips for maintaining a training plan with a busy work life and family commitments. Catherina will also speak about how to set practical running goals and will share general tips and advice for nutrition/hydration and recovery. The talk will also include a Q & A at the end.

  • Trek the Camino Santiago with Andrea Ryan

Trek the Camino

Andrea Ryan gives walkers the knowledge and advice needed to walk the Camino without paying tons of money. Her talk will cover the history of the Camino, how to motivate yourself to cover the milage, how to train, how to avoid blisters & tendonitis, how to book everything before you go, the best time of year to go and a Q&A session.

  • EVE Plantmarket Talk:   Training opportunities for people who have experienced mental health issues

EVE Plantmarket

EVE Plantmarket is a programme within the HSE, contracted by the DDLETB (Dublin Dun Laoghaire Education) to deliver vocational training to people who have experienced mental health difficulties.  Fiona Neacy from EVE Plantmarket will talk about the training centre and the programmes they offer.
