How can children read and be active at the same time??

Well Fingal libraries in conjunction with Fingal Sports have come up with a new initiative called the Big Sports Quiz. The intiative aims not only to improve childrens literacy but also their physical literacy with a clever programme that combines sports and reading.

Children from 3rd classes in St.Catherines NS Rush and Lusk NS are participating in the 7 week programme. This involves reading two sports related books and doing 45mins of physical activity through Fingal’s ‘Sports Conditioning’ programme every week. At the end of the 7 week period the children will be invited down to Rush library for the Big Sports Quiz with questions on their sports related books ‘Fintan’s Fifteen’ and ‘Get out and Play Football’ as well as Fingal’s ‘Sporting Facts’ workbook which looks at the physical, social and mental benefits of sport.

The aim of the programme is to make children aware of their local library and all the great books on offer while simultaneously encouraging children to be physically active in their spare time. According to the teachers the children won’t take their heads out of the books these days-well only when it’s time to go to ‘Sports Conditioning’ – not too much time for computer games then!
